* Rochester has been League Champions for 13 years straight.
* 53 sets of sisters and 5 second-generation athletes have cheered in the
R.H.S. cheer program during the 27 year Susan McVeigh/Wood coaching era.
* Rochester was the first team in Michigan to:
Full twist cradle ('94)
Double full twist cradle ('95)
Team standing back tuck ('00)
Team back handspring back tuck ('00)
* Every varsity girl, for the last 23 years, has mastered a solid back handspring.
R.H.S. has been performing team back tucks longer than any other team in
Michigan.......9 years.
* Girls from the Rochester cheer program have continued on to cheer at
MSU, U of M, CMU, NMU, WMU, Oakland U, Saginaw Valley, Grand Valley,
Ferris State, Wayne State, Alma College, Albion College, and National
Champions, U of West Georgia.
* Over the years, cheer team seniors have been awarded thousands of dollars in
academic scholarships from coaching and athletic organizations (M.C.C.A.,
M.H.S.A.A., etc). The first ever athlete in the Rochester Community Schools, out
of 24 varsity sports, to receive a scholarship from the M.H.S.A.A. was a Rochester
High cheerleader.
* R.H.S. is one of the few cheer teams left in the state who still does game
cheering during the winter competitive season. Most of our opponents use
those game days to practice for competition.
Still Striving to be the Best!
Beyond the trophies and titles, the cheer program represents something even greater than victory in competition. Success is not about winning - it's about making winners. And the amazing thing is that winners often win. Instilling integrity, commitment, work ethic, cooperation, and persistence will prepare these student athletes for the many challenging situations that they will encounter in their daily lives for years to come.
As so many teams before them, this team of 16 veterans is feeling the pressure of holding on to a state title and not letting complacency get the best of them. But there is no doubt as to why these 29 varsity athletes continue to be driven to exhaustion. They will have no regrets about the time and efforts they have sacrificed. The journey is something that they live for. The destination will be a fleeting moment on an exciting day in March. Having the opportunity to prepare for such a high level of competition is a privilege. The memories and life lessons will stay with them for many years. They will be forever proud and loyal to Rochester High.
